After connecting the volunteers to electrodes to monitor their brain activity, the researchers woke them at 4 a.m. to encourage lucid dreaming before returning them to sleep. During this time, the specific soundtracks associated with the unsolved puzzles were played to activate related memories, prompting the dreamers to engage with the challenges at hand.
By the following morning, an impressive 75% of the participants reported dreaming about the puzzles they had not solved. However, lucid dreaming specifically occurred only nine times throughout the study. The data showcased that participants who recognized the sound cues while asleep—and subsequently dreamt about the puzzles—were able to solve them 42% of the time. In contrast, those who did not have dream encounters with the associated sounds successfully solved only 17% of the puzzles.

While the results of the study hint at modest but promising improvements in problem-solving through subconscious engagement, the implications of such findings are vast. The concept of "hacking" our dreams for productivity may appeal to many, but Konkoly maintains a more holistic view: “I don’t think that all our dreams should be corrupted for creative problem-solving…I want people to value dreams more.”
