Neandertals’ Distinctive Noses: New Research Challenges Old Theories
In a groundbreaking study, researchers have upended long-held beliefs about Neandertal anatomy, particularly the size and function of their noses. Bruce Hardy, another paleoanthropologist from Kenyon College, commented on the implications of this study. While Neandertals have been noted for their stocky build—an adaptation that was indeed beneficial in cold climates—the idea that their noses were honed by evolving in such environments has been put into question. This study not only sheds light on Neandertal physiology but may also deepen our understanding of human evolution at large.
“This is the first firm evidence that Neandertal noses did not feature a similar adaptation to the cold,” Hardy explained. “The authors can actually observe the structure rather than speculate about it, and hopefully put the debate to rest.”
